What is a Gas Flare System?

A gas flare system is an industrial safety and environmental device used to safely burn off excess or unusable gases such as biogas, landfill gas, refinery off-gas, and industrial waste gas. The system captures the gas, ignites it through a pilot flame or auto ignition system, and supports high-efficiency combustion before release into the atmosphere. This helps prevent the discharge of methane — a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than CO₂ — along with volatile organic compounds and other pollutants.

Working Principle of a Gas Flare System

  1. Gas Collection: Waste gas or biogas is routed from the source (digester, landfill, reactor, or process unit) to the flare via a knockout drum or knock-out pot.
  2. Pressure & Flow Control: A control valve or water seal regulates gas flow to maintain safe pressure at the flare tip.
  3. Flame Arrestor: A flame arrestor prevents flashback from the flare stack into the upstream gas line.
  4. Ignition: A pilot flame or auto ignition system ignites the gas at the flare tip.
  5. Combustion: The gas burns, converting methane and VOCs into CO₂ and water vapour with minimal smoke and odour.
  6. Monitoring: Optional PLC / SCADA panels monitor flame presence, temperature, and flow.
